Kinetin effects on the ultrastructure of tobacco nicotiana tabacum isolated leaf mesophyll cells and tobacco mosaic virus multiplication in them

The ultrastructure of mesophyll cells of N. tabacum L. cv. Samsun detached leaves, both healthy and infected with tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), treated and untreated with kinetin, was studied. Kinetin in concentration 25 mcg/ml retards the development of the intracellular destructive processes. The nuclei are characterized by a high content of diffuse chromatin and a large friable nucleolus, the number of mitochondria increases and the membrane structure of chloroplasts is conserved much better in cells treated with phytohormone than in the control. Accumulation of TMV is decreased under kinetin effect. There is a connection between the phytohormone-caused retardation of intracellular catabolism and inhibition of virus multiplication.
