Kinetin promotion of expansion growth and the rna synthesis in cucumber cucumis sativus cultivar monastyrski cotyledons

Abstract
Cotyledons excised from etiolated seedlings of C. sativus L. cv. Monastyriski were incubated in darkness in the absence or presence of 0.1 mM kinetin for 3-40 h. Expansion growth, RNA content and precursor incorporation into total RNA and RNA fractions were determined. A significant enhancement of the total RNA synthesis could be demonstrated after 24 h of the kinetin treatment. Kinetin promoted the synthesis of rRNA and low MW RNA. After a short 5 h kinetin treatment, a transient synthesis of an RNA fraction appeared in the polydisperse region of RNA spectrum which is believed to represent mRNA. A synthesis of mRNA at an early phase of the cytokinin treatment apparently is of importance for the growth response of the cotyledons.
