Labetalol in i. v. administration in the treatment of hypertension emergencies

Revista de Medicina Interna Neurologie Psihiatrie Neurochirurgie Dermato Venerologie Serie Medicina Interna 38(3): 233-240

The effects of labetalol were evaluated in i.v. administration to 15 hypertensive patients with excessive increase of the AH (AH > 200/125 mmHg), manifestated under various types of hypertensive emergencies. Patients with congestive heart failure, severe bradycardia or bronchical asthma were not included in the group studied. Labetalol was administered in a 20 mg minibolus, repeated if necessary after 10 minutes, up to a total dose 100 mg. The results were compared with those obtained in a similar group to whom 10 mg. Nifedipine per lingual and 40 mg furosemide i.v. were administered. Very good results were obtained with Labetalol, superior to those of the nifedipine + furosemide association. No adverse effects developed in the patients with acute pulmonary edema and with attacks of hypertension.
