Labetalol plus chlorthalidone trandiur and atenolol plus chlorthalidone tenoretic in the treatment of essential hypertension with angina pectoris

Labetalol plus chlorthalidone trandiur and atenolol plus chlorthalidone tenoretic in the treatment of essential hypertension with angina pectoris

Clinical Trials Journal 23(5): 323-331

To investigate the therapeutic problem often seen in patients with both essential hypertension and angina pectoris, 10 hypertensive patients with stable angina pectoris were entered into an eight-week double-blind, randomized trial with labetalol-plus-chlorthalidone (Trandiur) and atenolol-plus-chlorthalidone (Tenoretic). The association of labetalol-plus-chlorthalidone proved more effective than atenolol-plus-chlorthalidone in terms of hypotensive effect. In both groups heart rate was reduced. The product of heart rate .times. systolic pressure (HR .times. SBP) following cycle ergometer exercise tests was appreciably reduced by both treatments. No abnormalities were found in blood, or in liver or renal function tests. Clinically, both groups showed a reduction in the daily frequency of angina attacks, with consequently reduced administration of sublingual nitroglycerin.
