Labial grooves and dermal ridges in twins with labial mandibular and palatine clefts

Labial grooves and dermal ridges in twins with labial mandibular and palatine clefts

Zeitschrift fuer Morphologie und Anthropologie 69(2): 197-204

In 11 twin pairs (7 monozygotic [MZ] and 4 dizygotic [DZ]) with clefts, lip prints and dermatoglyphics were investigated. Most lip prints showed paramedian whorl-patterns on the lower lip. Because lip prints are similar among patients with lower lip fistulas and because of early embryological findings, lower lip fistulas and paracentral whorls may belong to the same graduation scheme. A possible use of these results for the diagnosis of hereditary cleft lips and for assessing individuals predisposed to this risk was discussed. The patterns in many regions of palmar and plantar prints which are measurable in part showed greater differences among MZ twin pairs who were discordant regarding clefts than among those MZ twin pairs who were concordant. These may be due to differences in early embryonic differentiation of MZ partners and may play a considerable role in the developmental mechanisms of clefts.
