Laboratory and field experiments on the responses by two species of woodland salamanders to malathion treated substrates

Laboratory experiments documented responses by two congeneric terrestrial salamanders to substrates treated with the pesticide, malathion. Significant inhibition of brain cholinesterase (ChE) activity at a 5.6 kg/ha dosage was obtained for Plethodon glutinosus but not for P. cinereus. Although P. cinereus tended towards increased inhibition at higher doses, the differences were not statistically significant. In behavior experiments, neither species exhibited changes in feeding, endurance or coordination, but P. glutinosus may have suffered a loss in digestive efficiency when exposed to high dosages of malathion in the laboratory. However, a companion set of field studies conducted in North Carolina [USA] showed that even after ten applications of malathion, adult and juvenile P. glutinosus displayed no ChE inhibition, decreases in abundance, or effects on lipid storage patterns.
