Laboratory and field studies on eutonina indicans coelenterata hydrozoa a common leptomedusa of bodega bay california usa

Laboratory and field studies on eutonina indicans coelenterata hydrozoa a common leptomedusa of bodega bay california usa

Wasmann Journal of Biology 36(1-2): 201-209

The polyp and medusa stages of the hydroxoan E. indicans (Romanes, 1876) were successfully cultivated and maintained in the laboratory. Development time from planular settlement through colony growth to release of the 1st medusa was about 40 days under laboratory conditions. Medusae attained sexual maturity in 38 days but continued to grow and attained a laboratory age of 105 days. Medusa were collected in the surface plankton of Bodega Bay and Bodega Harbor, California, USA, in all months of the year except Jan. Colonies are reported from the field for the 1st time. The longevity of the medusae may be partially responsible for the wide geographic distribution of the species.
