Laboratory bioassay of the sex pheromone of mamestra brassicae lepidoptera noctuidae

The development of an olfactometric method, which is presently needed, could be applied to the study of natural substances influencing the behavior of insects, and for the study of some synthetic chemical substances used in control. An olfactometric laboratory method is described for the bioassay of the sex pheromone of M. brassicae, an important pest of cabbage cultures and other cultivated plants. In the olfactometric investigations on pheromones, the olfactometer must exhibit the normal behavior of insects and the behavioral phases in response to the sex pheromone (i.e., pheromone perception and induction of a sexual excitability state and the phase of source-oriented flight). The olfactometer, which is described and used in the study of the sex pheromone of M. brassicae, meets these criteria and is easy to handle and clean.
