Laboratory biology of meteorus autographae hymenoptera braconidae an indigenous parasitoid of soybean looper lepidoptera noctuidae larvae

Laboratory biology of meteorus autographae hymenoptera braconidae an indigenous parasitoid of soybean looper lepidoptera noctuidae larvae

Environmental Entomology 13(3): 838-842

Certain biological characteristics of the parasitoid M. autographae Muesebeck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were determined in the laboratory. Total developmental time from oviposition to emergence of adult M. autographae decreased with each successive increase in temperature (39.8 and 13.8 days at 16.degree. and 27.degree. C, respectively). M. autographae parasitized and developed successfully in 1st through 5th instars of Pseudoplusia includens (Walker). Larvae of Trichoplusia ni (Huebner), Heliothis zea (Boddie), H. virescens (F.), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), S. exigua (Huebner) and Anticarsia gemmatalis Huebner also were suitable hosts for M. autographae. An average of 241.8 progeny were produced/female during her lifetime. Larvae of P. includens that were parasitized by M. autographae ceased feeding .apprx. 6-8 days after parasitization and consumed 78% less soybean foliage than nonparasitized larvae.
