Laboratory cultivation of the sea urchin strongylocentrotus intermedius

Laboratory cultivation of the sea urchin strongylocentrotus intermedius

Soviet Journal of Marine Biology 9(1): 46-50

A technique for laboratory cultivation of the sea urchins S. intermedius which made it possible to rear the 3rd generation of the sea urchins in artificial environments was developed. In the laboratory, the animals reach sexual maturity in 1 yr after fertilization, with shell diameter of 20-38 mm. Rates of growth and maturation of the sea urchins are higher in the laboratory than in the sea.
