Laboratory culture and taxonomy of 2 species of derbesia class chlorophyceae in japan

Two species of Derbesia (class Chlorophyceae), D. marina and D. tenuissima, were studied. Morphological details and life histories, using preserved and living specimens as well as laboratory cultures are provided. The life cycles of both species were completed in the laboratory, starting from both zoospores and zygotes. Specimens were collected at Asamushi, Aomori-ken and Shimoda, Shizuoka-ken. Their life cycle types are identical, zoospores giving rise upon germination to a Halicystis-phase, while zygotes grow into a Derbesia-phase. The thallus of the Halicystis-phase which alternates with D. marina is the same as that of H. ovalis which grows in the northern regions of Japan. The thallus of the Halicystis-phase alternating with D. tenuissima is the same as that of H. parvula, known to occur in the temperate to subtropical regions of Japan. These results coincide with those obtained with D. marina and D. tenuissima in Europe, where the type localities of both species are located. Specimens assignable to these 2 species were collected at several localities in Japan and they are believed to be identical with either D. marina or D. tenuissima.
