Laboratory diagnosis of anaerobic infections experience and preliminary results from anaerobe laboratory institute of microbiology federal university of rio de janeiro brazil

Revista da Associacao Medica Brasileira 26(2): 46-48

Clinical specimens (94) were studied by bacteriologic procedures used for the isolation of facultative and obligately anaerobic organisms. Clinical features included documented cases of osteomyelitis, infected diabetic foot ulcer, abscesses, infected wounds, purulent otitis media, gangrene, ischemic ulcer and septic arthritis. Facultative and obligate anaerobes were recovered from 53 (56.4%) and 17 (18.1%) specimens, respectively. In 4 (4.2%) instances, strict anaerobes were recovered in pure culture. The obligate anaerobes were Bacteroides melaninogenicus, B. fragilis, Bacteroides sp., Fusobacterium, Propionibacterium, Clostridium perfringens, Peptostreptococcus and unidentified gram-negative rods and gram-positive cocci. Many obligate anaerobes were resistant to penicillin G and sensitive to chloroamphenicol, tetracycline and clindamycin.
