Laboratory diagnosis of rabies in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Laboratory diagnosis of rabies in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Boletin de la Oficina Sanitaria Panamericana. Pan American Sanitary Bureau 102(5): 464-475

This paper presents the results of rabies diagnoses made at the rabies laboratory of the Desiderio Finamor Institute of Veterinary Research and the Regional Diagnosis Laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Pelotas Federal University from 1979 to 1984. Altogether 4,587 samples were examined, or an average of 764.5 specimens per year. Of that total, 971, or 21,2%, tested positive: 367 (8.0%) from canines, 539 (11.7%) from cattle, 41 (0.9%) from felines, and 24 (0.5%) from other species. The techniques used in the diagnoses were examination for Negri bodies by Seller's technique, direct immunofluorescence, and mouse inoculation. The detection of positives in the three techniques averaged 69.5% by Seller's technique, 97.85% by immunofluorescence, and 99.6% by mouse inoculation. The authors then present the monthly distribution of rabies cases over the six years considered, which shows a downward tendency of canine rabies starting in 1982 and a great increase in bovine rabies starting in 1983, revealing a shift of the situation in the field characterized by an epizootic in the highlands of the state, although on a much smaller scale than the major epizootics of former years.
