Laboratory evaluation of 4 insecticides for controlling dermestes maculatus on smoke dried fish

Dried fish requires protection against insect pests such as D. maculatus during handling and storage in warm climates. Synergized pyrethrins were recommended for control purposes but degrade in sunlight. Alternative compounds including pirimiphos-methyl, chlorpyrifos-methyl and methacrifos gave effective protection to fish dipped briefly in solutions of 0.00625% concentration prior to storage for 28 days. Pirimiphos methyl at 0.0125% concentration gave the best protection over a longer storage period. Permethrin failed to control D. maculatus but gave some indications of repellency. Insecticide residue levels in treated fish fell significantly during storage at 27.degree. C.
