Laboratory evaluation of commercial and experimental repellents against Ornithodoros parkeri (Acari: Argasidae)

Ten commercial and 11 experimental repellents were tested on white mice against the soft tick Ornithodoros parkeri, a vector of the causative agent of relapsing fever in the western U.S. The most effective commercial repellent was permethrin (EC95 = 0.14%), followed by dimethyl phthalate (EC95 = 0.23%). The most effective experimental repellent was USDA AI3-35765 [1-(3-cyclohexen-1-ylcarbonyl)piperidine, EC95 = 0.75%]. MGK Repellent 326, ethyl hexanediol, dibutyl phthalate, Stabilene, and 2 experimental repellents were ineffective against O. parkeri.
