Laboratory evaluation of the juvenile hormone analogue fenoxycarb against some insecticide susceptible and resistant stored products beetles

The juvenile hormone analogue fenozycarb, (ethyl[2-(phenoxy-phenoxy)ethyl]carbamate) was evaluated against a number of insecticide-susceptible and resistant strains of stored-product insects. The order of susceptibility to the compound was Tribolium castaneum > Cryptolestes ferrugineus > Oryzaephilus surinamensis > Rhyzopertha dominica. A malathion-specific resistant strain of T. castaneum (Kano-C) with > 260-fold resistance to malathion was found to be more susceptible to the compound than the insecticide-susceptible strain (FSS-II). Some degree of tolerance was evident in the non-specific malathion resistant strain of T. castaneum (CTC-12) compared with the susceptible strain. There was no evidence of cross-tolerance to fenoxycarb in insecticide-resistant strains of C. ferrugineus, O. surinamensis or R. dominica.
