Laboratory evaluation of toxicity of 2 alkaloidal amides of piper guineense to 4 species of stored product insects

Two alkaloidal amides, wisanine and delta.alpha.beta.-dihydrowisanine, and piperine showed moderate to low toxicity when they were applied topically to Sitophilus oryzae (L.). They had low or no toxicity in Callosobruchus maculatus (F.), Lasioderma serricorne (F.) and Tribolium confusum Jacquelin duVal. Surface treatment with 3000 ppm or more of each of the alkaloids protected wheat against S. oryzae and black-eyed peas against C. maculatus. Even at a concentration of 500 ppm, wisanine and piperine still provided some protection to these commodities but dihydrowisanine did not.
