Laboratory experiments on effects of aldicarb and carbofuran on the growth of arabidopsis thaliana and on mitosis in root tips of allium cepa

Laboratory experiments were done with the carbamate insecticides aldicarb and carbofuran to study direct effects on plant cell division and cell elongation which may be responsible for increased growth responses observed in treated field crops even in the absence of phytophagous pests. A. thaliana was grown at 20 .+-. 1.degree. C with 16-h daily photoperiod in nutrient media with either no insecticide or 0.001-100 .mu.g aldicarb or carbofuran/ml. Sixty days after sowing, flower-stems on plants in media with 0.001, 0.01 or 1.0 .mu.g aldicarb and 0.001, 0.01 or 0.1 .mu.g carbofuran/ml were significantly longer than those of check plants in media without insecticide (P < 0.01). Stems of plants in media with 100 .mu.g of either insecticide/ml were similar to those of check plants. The suitability of this species for the assay of direct effects of insecticides on plant growth is discussed. Immersion of onion root tips in darkness for 7 h or 17 h at 20 .+-. 1.degree. C in aqueous solutions containing 0.001-10 .mu.g aldicarb or carbofuran/ml increased the mitotic index (P < 0.01). The index was significantly reduced with 100 .mu.g of either insecticide/ml. Treatment with 0.001-10 .mu.g aldicarb or carbofuran/ml significantly decreased the numbers of cells in prophase and increased those in metaphase and anaphase. At 100 .mu.g/ml, neither insecticide had any significant effect on the numbers of cells in any phase. Some implications of these results for the use of these insecticides in the field are discussed.
