Laboratory investigations on the carbon di oxide exchange of lichens from the central eastern alps 2. the dependence of carbon di oxide exchange of terricolous subalpine lichens and of pseudevernia furfuracea on the water content of thalli

The CO2 gas exchange of terricolous lichens of a subalpine Loiseleurio-Cetrarietum community in the eastern Alps of Austria and of P. furfuracea from different elevations was investigated in relation to the water content of the thalli. Under optimal temperature conditions and light intensities near the saturation point for net photosynthesis subalpine epigeic lichens which have a low ability to take up water, reduce their photosynthetic rates at a high water saturation of the thalli. They show a clear moisture optimum of the apparent CO2 uptake. Lichens which have a high ability to take up water do not reduce their photosynthetic rates as much at a high water saturation of the thalli, so that a clear moisture optimum of net photosynthesis is less apparent. The photosynthetic reaction of P. furfuracea from different elevations shows a large variability in relation to light intensity, temperature and thallus water content.
