The larval development of Sesarma rectum Randali, 1840 was studied in laboratory through eggs hatched from ovigerous females collected in Bertioga, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. All the studies were conducted in a climatically controlled room at 24 .+-. 1.degree. C, at a salinity (32.permill.). Larvae were fed with newly hatched Artemia salina nauplii. Detailed figurs and descriptions of all larval stages are presented. The development of Sesarma rectum comprises 3 stages of zoea and one of megalopa. The main morphological characters that allow the identification of the zoeae and megalopae of S. rectum are analysed with respect to other Brazilian species of the family Grapsidae.
