Three population of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) were used to evaluate the role of leaf trichomes in resistance to green peach aphids (GPA), Myzus persicae (Sulzer), and to investigate using trichomes as selective criteria in breeding for green peach aphid (GPA) resistance. The populations were derived from crosses between Ky 14, a burley tobacco cultivar, and three Tobacco Introductions (T.I.) differing in trichome traits: Population I, T.I. 1112 with only simple trichomes; Population II, T.I. 1068 with a high density of secreting glandular trichomas (SGT); and Population III, T.I. 1406 (Virgin A Mutant) with nonsecreting glandular trichomes (NSGT). Each population consisted of the parents, and the F1, F2 and F4 gnerations which were grown at Lexington, Ky. in 1985 and 1986. Each segregating generation was split into two groups by selection of F2 plants on the basis of low or high trichome density. Scores for leaf trichome density were obtained for all plant materials, and natural infestations of GPA were used. F3 and F4 lines with high density scores for simple and NSGT in Populations I and III respectively, had the lowest aphid infestation. In Population II, plants with high densities of SGT had lower aphid infestations. In this population, the density of SGT was greater than in the other two populations. The results suggested that selection for simple trichomes and NSGT in Populations I and II would result in greater aphid resistance, but this may result in less resistance to other insects.
