Levels of endogenous auxins and gibberellins in rhododendron stalk cutting related to rhizogenesis

The contents of endogenous gibberellins and auxins were observed in basal parts of cuttings obtained from a set of 7 rhododendron varieties characterized by different rooting capacities. The analyses were made in excellent-rooting 'Jacksonii' and 'Mad Mason' varieties, further in good-rooting 'Catawbiense', intermediate-rooting 'Allah', 'Blue Peter' and 'Roseum elegans' varieties, and finally in poor-rooting 'Peter' variety. The results suggested that, with expansion of the rhizogenesis in the cuttings, there was a trend toward decreasing the level of endogenous gibberellins in individual varieties and another, simultaneously occurring tendency toward increasing endogenous auxins. The poor-rooting 'Peter' variety had the lowest auxin level and a relatively high gibberellin level; the typical excellent-rooting 'Jacksonii' had a relatively low level of gibberellins, while the auxin level was highest. The only exception to this trend was observed with 'Mad Mason'.
