Local hyperthermochemotherapy combined with an anticancer agent for metastatic hepatic cancer

Local hyperthermochemotherapy combined with an anticancer agent for metastatic hepatic cancer

Journal of Tokyo Women's Medical College 57(11): 1259-1269

A total of 319 local hyperthermic treatments of the liver were performed by exposure to 13. 56MHz radiofrequency waves in 22 patients with unresectable metastatic hepatic cancer. At the same time, an anticancer agent was administered by intravenous or one-shot intraarterial injection. The cumulative survival rate in the hyperthermochemotherapy group (first group) was compared with that in the chemotherapy group (second group) and untreated group (third group) which were used as controls. Accordingly, it was the highest with statistical significance in the first group and effectiveness of hyperthermochemotherapy was demonstrated. When the survival rate was compared for each degree of hepatic metastasis, it was significantly higher in the first group than in the second and third groups in H3 patients. When patients from the hyperthermochemotherapy group were classified into the intravenous MMC group (Iv group) and one-shot intraarterial MMC group (Ia group), according to the criteria for evaluating the direct effect of chemotherapy for solid cancers of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, partial response, minor response, no change and progressive disease were noted in 0, 0, 9 and 2 patients from the Iv group, respectively (response rate: 0%), while these were noted in 5, 4, 1 and 1 of 11 patients from the Ia group (response rate: 45%). Hyperthermochemotherapy elicited only side effects, such as burns and slight to moderate leucocytopenia, thrombocytopenia and hair loss due to anticancer treatment.
