Lymphomas and pseudo lymphomas of the gastrointestinal tract a retrospective analysis including a study of immunologic markers in fifty two malignant lymphomas and five pseudo lymphomas

Archives d'Anatomie et de Cytologie Pathologiques 34(3): 143-145

A retrospective analysis, with a study of immunologic markers, was carried out in fifty-two malignant lymphomas (ML) and five pseudo-lymphomas of the gastrointestinal tract. Our findings for ML are consistent with previous reports by Western authors: predominance of gastric localizations (57.6%), predominance of B-cell (ML (77%), value of immunologic markers for the accurate identification of ML, and marked differences in the distribution of histologic types as compared to MLs in the Middle East, North Africa or Japan. However, there were a few unusual findings in our series: scarity of ileocecal ML (1 case), rather small tumor size (mean : 4.4 cm), and presence of a few rare histologic types (1 ML associated with Mediterranean lymphoma, rare among Western lymphomas, 1 signet-ring-cell ML, rare in all areas, and 2 presumptive pleomorphic T-cell ML, unfrequent among gastrointestinal lymphomas). Our five cases of gastric pseudo-lymphomas (PL) exhibited the morphologic characteristics typical of these benign tumors and showed a polyclonal pattern of cytoplasmic immunoglobulin. However, even the presence of monoclonal markers does not disprove PL, but may indicate only an increased risk for secondary development into malignant lymphoma. As no fresh or frozen specimens were available for our study, we were unable to confirm the nature of our 2 presumptive T-cell pleomorphic ML or identify the surface Igs of some of our B-cell ML.
