Meiosis in diploid and colchicine-induced autotetraploid tomatillo was studied. In the diploid, meiosis was regular without any evidence for structural alterations in the genome. In the tetraploid, multivalent frequency was low and the chiasma frequency per PMC [pollen mother cell] was significantly less than twice that in the corresponding diploid. Dicentric bridges and acentric fragments characteristic of chromosome breakage, presumably due to a colchicine effect were recorded at anaphase I and II. Pollen sterility was very high in the tetraploid and pollen fertility was high in the diploid.
