Metabolism of carbon 13 labeled gibberellin a 29 to gibberellin catabolite in maturing seeds of pisum sativum cultivar progress no. 9
Metabolism of GA29 during seed maturation in P. sativum cv. Progress no. 9 was investigated. [17-13C1]GA29 was metabolized to a GA-catabolite, with incorporation of [13C] label from GA29 substrate into GA-catabolite being demonstrated by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). Quantitation of GA-catabolite using GC-MS was achieved by adding GA-catabolite, labeled with [18O] to seed extracts as an internal standard. At least 50% conversion of [13C1]GA29 to [13C1]GA-catabolite was demonstrated with build up of exogenous [13C1]GA-catabolite which paralleled accumulation of native GA-catabolite. Conversion of GA29 to GA-catabolite may be a natural metabolic step occurring during final stages of seed maturation; 25 .mu.g/seed of native GA-catabolite was recorded in 37 day old seeds. Problems encountered in analysis of extracts containing the GA-catabolite were discussed.
