Methods for screening resistance in chickpea to ascochyta blight

Methods for screening resistance in chickpea to ascochyta blight

Euphytica 35(3): 1007-1010

In Morocco, Ascochyta blight is [Ascochyta rabiei] a major limiting factor in chickpea [Cicer arietinum] production. The best long term solution in the problem seems to be the production of chickpea lines with durable resistance to the disease. Because of the nature of durable resistance, screening methods assessing resistance quantitatively had to be developed. Four methods are described: a seedling test, a germination test, a score of the percentage infected pods and a hair density score. With these screening methods a quantitative assessment of resistance in chickpea to blight appeared possible.
