Metopism in Bedouin crania from the Negev of Israel

Metopism in Bedouin crania from the Negev of Israel

Zeitschrift für Morphologie und Anthropologie 68(3): 293-297

Some 170 crania of Bedouin from 2 sites of the Negev in Israel, living about 200 BP, were examined for incidence of the metopic suture. Frequency of the suture in these Bedouin was among the highest recorded in the literature: 23% at one site, 19% at the other (both sexes, all ages). Incidence by sex was not consistent at the 2 sites, although crania of adults from both sites combined indicated a higher incidence among females (23.6%) than among males (17.8%). The metopic suture was complete in 17.2%, and incomplete (about half) in 3.4% (adults, both sexes, both sites). The relative frequency of an incomplete suture was higher in children than in adults (7.7% vs. 3.4%). The literature is noted, and possible factors involved in the retention of the suture are briefly reviewed.
