T. matsutake has a symbiotic relationship with various conifers Pinus densiflora, P. pumila, Tsuga diversifolia, T. sieboldii and Picea ezoensis), forming mycorrhizae on their fine roots. Its allied species also form similar type mycorrhizae on several species of deciduous and coniferous trees. This fungus formed ectomycorrhiza on pine rootlets, and the mycorrhiza are described as parasitic, judging from the hyphal invasion into host cells and the damping off of seedlings inoculated with this fungus. Nutritional requirements of this fungus and its allied species were investigated by several workers. The fungus can utilize only some monosaccharides and a few disaccharides; it requires thiamine and some other micro elements for its hyphal growth. Such physiological characters were reported by several workers on other ectomycorrhizal fungi. The mycorrhiza formed by this fungus presumably can be defined as ectomycorrhizal, with a parasitic character physiologically and ecologically. A detailed observation of the mycorrhiza, following its growing stages, seasonal variation and the distribution of the mycorrhiza and plant roots in Shiro soil are described.
