T. matsutake in P. glehnii and P. glehnii-A. sachalinensis forests [Japan] exhibited the same ecological characteristics as those in Pinus densiflora forest. This strain formed its Shiro [circular fungal colonies or fairy rings] under poor soil condition in eroded soil, lapilli and dry podsolic soil. The mycelia in soil or in culture were the same as those of other strains, and the mycorrhizae were ectomycorrhiza with a slight parasitic character. The number of soil fungi was reduced inside the Shiro, but the normal fungal flora recovered with moistening of the soil. The Shiro of this strain could be formed at either wet or dry sites.
