This fungus which was hunted in T. sieboldii forests as Tsuga take is one of the strains of T. matsutake occurring in the several coniferous forests. The strain occurs in Tsuga sieboldii and T. sieboldii-Abies firma forests, but it is a rather rare species in Tsuga stand. The mycelium inhabits in mineral soil layer poor in organic matters and forms the specific type of Shiro to this species. The mycorrhiza formed on the young fine roots of Tsuga sieboldii is witches broom-like or elongate-pinnate shaped, with somewhat parasitic characteristics, lacking a fungal sheath and Hartig's net formation. Most of the soil fungi are removed from the territory, but Mortierella sp. dominates in the Shiro soil. The soil inside the Shiro desiccates and turns to a white powdery structure. These same tendencies were noted in Pinus densiflora and other coniferous forests.
