Monitoring plasma concentrations of zonisamide and clonazepam in an epileptic attempting suicide by an overdose of the drugs

Monitoring plasma concentrations of zonisamide and clonazepam in an epileptic attempting suicide by an overdose of the drugs

Current Therapeutic Research 43(3): 463-467

An epileptic patient attempting suicide by an overdose of antiepileptic drugs is described. Four hours after the suicide attempt a comatose state was evidenced. With intensive monitoring of plasma concentrations of antiepileptic drugs, the toxic symptom of coma was assumed to be induced with both zonisamide, a new antiepileptic agent, and clonazepam. The elimination half-life was found to be 56.5 hours for zonisamide and 23.3 hours clonazepam. This case may present important data on human pharmacokinetics of zonisamide.
