Morphology and anatomy of leaves of sorbus aucuparia sorbus gorodkovii and sorbus sibirica rosaceae

Morphology and anatomy of leaves of sorbus aucuparia sorbus gorodkovii and sorbus sibirica rosaceae

Botanicheskii Zhurnal (St Petersburg) 67(9): 1264-1271

The morphological and anatomical characteristics of generative and vegetative organs of S. aucuparia, S. gorodkovii and S. sibirica were studied for clarifying the controversial taxonomy of the 3 spp. as independent species. The material for study was taken from the most characteristic habitats of the species. S. aucuparia shoots and leaves were collected from trees growing in the Leningrad Oblast, those of S. gorodkovii were from the Murmansk Oblast and those of S. sibirica were from the Tyumen Oblast, Russian SFSR, USSR. Preliminary studies revealed that morphological indices of the 3 spp. had great variability. The description of the epidermal cell membrane was the most constant and reliable index for taxonomic definition of the 3 spp. S. sibirica resembled S. aucapria in leaf structure but differed in fruit structure and 1- and 3-yr old shoot internodes. S. gorodkovii differed from the other 2 spp. by fruit and internodes of the vegetative shoot and leaves. The 3 spp. should be considered as independent species.
