Mortality of eggs and larvae of the tobacco hornworm manduca sexta on jimsonweed datura stramonium and various tobacco cultivars in kentucky usa

Mortality of eggs and larvae of the tobacco hornworm manduca sexta on jimsonweed datura stramonium and various tobacco cultivars in kentucky usa

Environmental Entomology 8(5): 802-807

Survival of the tobacco hornworm, M. sexta (L.), from egg to prepupa was 0.8, 5.7 and 2.3% but survival from the 1st instar to prepupa was 7.5, 6.5 and 3.0% when on Jimson weed [Datura stromineum L.], burley tobacco and Tobacco Introduction (TI) 1298, respectively. These differences resulted primarily from differences in egg parasitism [Telenomus sphingis (Ashmead) and Trichogramma minutum Riley], which was high on Jimson weed, low on TI 1298 and nil on burley tobacco.
