Mutation breeding in maize iv. results of the first cycle economically valuable maize lines

Genetika i Selektsiya 21(2): 115-121

Results from breeding work after the scheme of recurrent mutation selection (RMS) are presented in the article. A collection of stabilized I cycle mutant lines has been developed. They are distinguished by changed ear parameters, elements of productivity and combining ability (CA). Of the mutants evaluated for CA after Griffing's method 4, line XM-530 proved to be with high general combining ability (GCA) for yield and XM-532.sbd.for crude protein content. Lines XM-507, XM-532 and XM-1918-3 had high specific combining ability (SCA) for yield while lines XM-1918-3, XM-500 and XM-530.sbd.for crude protein content. Of the stabilized highly productive lines, XM-521, XM-525, XM-544, XM-544, XM-552, XM-553, XM-554, XM-559, XM-568, XM-615, XM-620 and XM-637 had also high combining ability and should be used on a larger scale in breeding programs. In inbred maize lines treated with chemical mutagens was induced a high percentage of mutation variability, affecting the elements of productivity and CA and providing opportunities to stablize by purposeful selection for phenotype and genotype even in the early generations highly productive mutant lines, valuable in combining ability.
