The quantitative spacial arrangement of fungal microflora on halophilic soils in Lorraine [France] depends upon the ecological variation which results in a zoning very characteristic of phanerogamic vegetation. The concentration of chlorides does not explain the quantitative changes observed. The asphyxiant nature of the soils may be at least as important, this character being bonded with texutre, length of submersion periods, vegetal cover density and rooting. The shortage of organic substances is a factor impeding the development of the microflora.
