New approach of periodicity of filaria wuchereria bancrofti var pacifica

New approach of periodicity of filaria wuchereria bancrofti var pacifica

Cahiers O R S T O M (Office de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique Outre-Mer) Serie Entomologie Medicale et Parasitologie 17(2): 89-106

The weak and irregular periodicity which characterizes the microfilariae of W. bancrofti var. pacifica [causative organism of human filariasis] is tentatively explained as resulting of the superimposition of biorhythms differing in phase and in period. This suspected greater genetic diversity could have been preserved by the biting habits of the main vector, Aedes polynesiensis. Autonomous circadian rhythms seem to be extremely stable: through folding effect, they probably produce, during more than a year, apparent low frequency, cyclic fluctuations. Several hypothesis are discussed, in particular about the ancestry of W. bancrofti var. pacifica with regard to the nocturnal periodicity of the typical form, and the possible chrono-pharmacological effect of diethyl-carbamazine.
