New cell lines from embryos of melanoplus sanguinipes orthoptera acrididae

Two cell lines from embryos of M. sanguinipes (F.), the lesser migratory grasshopper, were established in a cockroach cell culture medium havijng a Na+/K+ ratio of 10 and supplemented with 16.7% fetal bovine serum. Although the age of the embryos that were used to initiate the cultures was immaterial, a large cell inoculum was necessary. A 2-yr adaptation period elapsed before growth of the cells permitted regular subculturing. UM-MSE-1178-1 consists of hollow vesicles of epithelial-like cells of undetermined ploidy. UM-MSE-1178-2 grows as a monolayer and is predominantly diploid after 20 passages. This line may be useful in culturing viruses, but the susceptibility of the line was not tested.
