New winter bread wheat lines with combined resistance to puccinia graminis tritici and puccinia recondita tritici developed in the institute of plant protection kostinbrod bulgaria

New lines of winter bread wheat, resistant to black stem and brown leaf rust, were developed as a result of hybridization involving American sources of resistance, the IPP lines Dimitrovka 5-12 and Dimitrovka 5-21, and the high yielding Soviet cv. Bezostaya 1. The reaction of 46 lines was tested to individual races of black stem and brown leaf rust at the 1st and 2nd leaf phases and post heading. Most of the lines were resistant. Some lines combine resistance to both rusts with other valuable characters such as earliness, comparatively short and non-lodging stem, cold resistance and productivity.
