Nitrite reductase activity protein content and yield in liguleless and ligule possessing maize forms

Nitrite reductase activity, protein and chlorophyll content and grain yield per plant were determined in 2 mutant liguleless maize forms and a ligule-possessing normal maize form. The determination was made at 3 phases of plant development: appearance of the 5th leaf, tasseling and anthesis. Nitrite reductase activity is highest during tasseling and subsequently declines. The liguleless forms, especially the mutant form No. 1, have the highest activity, much higher compared to the ligule-possessing form (the control). Chlorophyll content in the same No. 1 mutant liguleless form is also highest while in the control it is lowest. Protein content rises depending on developmental stage. The young plants of forms No. 1 and 2 contain more protein than the control. Protein synthesis is most intensive in form No. 1. All raised values of the studied indices help produce higher grain yield per plant. The liguleless form No. 1 has a 56% higher yield than the control, while form No. 2 has a 14% higher yield.
