The IARC[International Agency for Research on Cancer]-nitramine method for the determination of volatile nitrosamines can be applied for the examination of corn silage, but requires modification for this purpose, is time consuming and prone to interferences. The method of choice is thermal energy analysis. When using this method it was possible to demonstrate in 60% of 180 samples of corn silage dimethyl-, diethyl-, dipropyl-, dibutylnitrosamines and other unidentified compounds. Most values were in the order of .ltoreq. 10 ppb. In a few cases they reached .gtoreq. 100 ppb. There was no correlation between formation of N-nitrosamines and amount of nitrate and external factors except perhaps the duration of silage. A carry-over of N-nitrosamines from corn silage into cow's milk was not detected. All commercial milk samples from local distributors were free of N-nitrosamines.
