Notes on the nomenclature of pelargonium geraniaceae

Notes on the nomenclature of pelargonium geraniaceae

Journal of South African Botany 45(3): 377-380

The first legitimate publication of the name Pelargonium appeared in Aiton's Hortus Kewensis of 1789. This generic description was copied from L'Heritier's unpublished manuscript titled Compendium Generalogium, for which reason L'Heritier is considered to be the author of Pelargonium. The specific descriptions of Pelargonium in the Hortus Kewensis were supplied by L'Heritier and were taken verbatim from Compendium Generalogium. For this reason L'Heritier should also be regarded as the author of these species. P. cucullatum (L.) L'Herit. (Geranium cucullatum L.) is proposed as lectotype species of the genus.
