Nursery studies on cultivar west coast tall coconut to select seedlings for early transplanting

ISSN/ISBN: 0304-5242

Possibility of selecting 'West Coast Tall' coconut seedlings at the 5th mo. itself in the nursery was indicated based on the high and positive correlation of growth characters like collar girth and leaf production from the 5th mo. after germination with those of the later months. Studies on the rate of growth of seedlings in respect of collar girth and leaf production indicated that the growth rate which was high in the beginning decreased slowly till the 6th mo. and thereafter increased gradually. This could be attributed to the utilization of endosperm by the seedling till the 6th mo. and thereafter a gradual change over to full dependence on photosynthesis. Selection of seedlings at early stage in the nursery reduces the setback in growth immediately after transplantation.
