Observations on the dependency of the degree of parasitism by ascogaster quadridentatus from different embryonic stages of the host laspeyresia pomonella

Observations on the dependency of the degree of parasitism by ascogaster quadridentatus from different embryonic stages of the host laspeyresia pomonella

Zeitschrift fuer Angewandte Zoologie 63(3): 267-272

The rearing of codling moth as a host of A. quadridentatus was carried out on a semiartificial diet (Shorey and Hale, 1965). In the test, adults of A. quadridentatus of a 7th and 8th laboratory generation were used. It was possible to show that the degree of parasitism depended on the stage of embryonic development of the host eggs. The highest degree of parasitism was observed when 2-4 day old eggs were offered to the parasite. When 0-1 or 5-7 day old eggs were offered, the percentage of parasitism decreased, but not below 35%. Neonate larvae of the codling moth were not infested by A. quadridentatus. Parasitism depended greatly on the age of the parasite. The capacity of parasitization was nearly equally good until the 15th (7th generation) and 16th (8th generation) day of life of A. quadridentatus and ranged between 90-100%. Beginning with the 16th and 17th day, parasitism decreased drastically. These investigations should serve as a contribution for the practical use of A. quadridentatus in a field release program in connection with integrated pest control and also laboratory tests of side-effects of pesticides on beneficial arthropods.
