Observations on the orchidaceous flora of simla india and adjacent hills in the northwestern himalayas asia ecology and distribution

Observations on the orchidaceous flora of simla india and adjacent hills in the northwestern himalayas asia ecology and distribution

Research Bulletin of the Panjab University Science 33(3-4): 163-176

Orchidaceous flora of the Simla and adjacent hills are exclusively terrestrial in habit and occupy various ecological niches to meet their requirements of water and light. The absence of epiphytic orchids in the area under study apparently is correlated with relatively low rainfall, severe winters and preponderance of coniferous forests. Corallorhiza innata, Cymbidium macrorhizon, Eulophia campestris, Liparis cordifolia, Pachystoma senile and Zeuxine membranacea are recorded for the 1st time in the region. Detailed observations on the habitats of various species were made.
