Environmental factors and practical afforestation techniques are not the major constraints to tree planting in arid and semi-arid lands. More important are social features (including land use and tenure, community organization) and economic constraints (such as the lack of a monetarized economy, poor transport, marketing systems and poor understanding of long-term cost-benefit appraisal). There is a great need to devise incentives and encourage participation in tree planting schemes by local populations and for professional and non-professional training in extension techniques for arid zones.
