Occurrence of 2 species of tetraphyllidea in sharks of the brazilian coast and considerations on the genera cylindrophorus platybothrium and phoreiobothrium cestoda tetraphyllidea

Occurrence of 2 species of tetraphyllidea in sharks of the brazilian coast and considerations on the genera cylindrophorus platybothrium and phoreiobothrium cestoda tetraphyllidea

Revista Brasileira de Biologia 36(2): 321-328

Phyllobothrium prionacis Yamaguti, 1934 and Platybothrium auriculatum Yamaguti, 1952 were collected from the spiral valve of the shark. This is the 1st record for South America. P. prionacis cannot be considered a synonym of P. angustum (Linton, 1889) but the status of both species is not very clear. P. auriculatum cannot be referred to P. angustum (Linton, 1889); the status of the latter is not clear. Cylindrophorus posteroporus Riser, 1955 and Platybothrium baeri Euzet, 1952 are synonyms of P. auriculatum Yamaguti. Concerning to the diagnoses of Cylindrophorus, Platybothrium and Phoreiobothrium some modifications concerning the hooks are suggested. In Cylindrophorus each bothridia has a pair of hooks, in which 1 hook has 2 prongs (bifid) and the other 3 prongs (trifid). In Platybothrium each bothridia has 1 pair of bifid hooks, with 1 inverted Y-shaped hook and the other, with 2 unequal prongs and a forked root. In Phoreiobothrium each bothridia has a pair of hooks both with 3 prongs (trifid), although unequal or rudimentary.
