Occurrence of antibodies against brucella brucella abortus brucella melitensis brucella canis in serum samples of cloven hoofed game of west germany

The 399 serum samples from native cloven-hoofed game were investigated for agglutinating antibodies against B. abortus, B. melitensis and B. canis. Antibodies against B. abortus and B. melitensis were found in 4.2% of 96 sera from red deer (Cervus elaphus) and in 5.7% of 70 sera from wild boar (Sus scrofa). No antibodies were detected against these Brucella antigens in 29 sera from moufflon (Ovis musimon), in 35 sera from fallow deer (Dama dama) or in 169 sera from roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). Agglutinating antibodies against B. canis were detected in 1 serum of moufflon and in 2 sera of red deer. The significance of these serological findings is discussed.
