Occurrence of aphids aphididae homoptera belonging to hormaphidinae lachninae and pemphiginae as influenced by some ecological factors in darjeeling district west bengal and sikkim india

Indian Journal of Ecology 9(1): 99-107

Altogether 23, 7 and 15 spp. of aphids belonging to 16, 4 and 8 genera of Hormaphidinae, Lachninae and Pemphiginae, respectively, were recorded from Darjiling District, West Bengal and Sikkim during 1968-1972. The preferred altitudinal strata for the subfamilies, Hormaphidinae, Lachninae and Pemphiginae lie between 601-1200 m, above 1201 m and between 1801-2000 m, respectively. Hormaphidinae were mostly recorded during the cooler period of the year; pemphigids were found during spring-summer followed by winter months. The number of species belonging to Lachninae being small no definite season of preference could be noticed. Hormaphidenae and Pemphigenae mostly inhabit graminaeous plants, the latter again being restricted to the roots of the hosts; the lachnids from Rosaceae. The gallicolous habit and host alteration of Hormaphidinae and Pemphiginae, which is usual in the palearctic and nearctic regions was not found.
