Occurrence of choetospila elegans hymenoptera pteromalidae as a parasite of sitophilus oryzae coleoptera curculionidae

Occurrence of choetospila elegans hymenoptera pteromalidae as a parasite of sitophilus oryzae coleoptera curculionidae

Anais da Sociedade Entomologica do Brasil 13(1): 107-116

Some of the relationships between the natural parasitism of S. oryzae (L.) by the microhymenopteran C. elegans (Westwood) was studied under laboratory conditions. The trial was established under controlled conditions of temperature, relative humidity and photoperiod. The treatments were the initial populations of 0, 5, 10 and 20 pairs of S. oryzae, reared in grains of corn of the 'Flint Composto', and 'Piranao' varieties and the 'hybrid C-111', stored for periods of 60, 105 and 150 days. Analysis of variance showed that the population of C. elegans was affected by the initial infestation of S. oryzae and the storage period, because this hymenopteran is a parasite of immature stages of stored products pests, and its population is a direct function of the amount of larvae living inside the grains. A negative relation exists between the increment of the population of C. elegans and the highest S. oryzae population densities in the 'Flint Composto' and 'Piranao' varieties, indicating that this insect could not be used for biological control of S. oryzae in corn because it could not reduce the rice weevil infestation up to economic levels.
